THE WHAT? Shiseido has developed two AI-based systems designed to assess the biodegradability of cosmetic ingredients and rapidly identify safety information, strengthening its digital transformation (DX) strategy in R&D.

THE DETAILS The first innovation is an AI-QSAR-based biodegradability assessment method that predicts how cosmetic ingredients break down into naturally occurring substances such as water and carbon dioxide. Developed in cooperation with Japan’s National Institute of Technology and Evaluation and building on a Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry-backed project, the system analyses chemical structures to deliver highly accurate biodegradability predictions. Processes that traditionally took one to two months can now generate results in real time, reducing reliance on individual expertise and extensive laboratory testing.

The second development is an AI-powered safety information identification system that extracts and evaluates relevant safety data — including toxicity, irritation and allergenic risks — from vast internal and external datasets. The tool improves accuracy, reduces bias and enables specialists to focus on final safety decisions. The research was presented at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Alternatives to Animal Experiments in 2024, where it received the Conference Chair’s Special Award.

THE WHY? The technologies support Shiseido’s sustainability and safety commitments by accelerating environmentally responsible ingredient selection, improving compliance with high safety standards and reducing dependence on time-intensive manual processes, while enabling broader industry adoption.
