THE WHAT? French luxury department store Galeries Lafayette has closed its flagship Beijing location after 13 years, reflecting ongoing challenges in China’s luxury retail market.

THE DETAILS  The six-storey, 48,000-square-metre store in central Beijing ceased operations after more than a decade in the Chinese market. Opened in 2013 during a period of rapid luxury sector growth, the flagship was one of the retailer’s first major investments in mainland China. Galeries Lafayette cited evolving consumer expectations, changing market dynamics and declining demand for traditional department store formats as factors behind the closure. The company noted that shoppers are increasingly seeking convenience, personalised services, experiential retail and wellness-focused offerings. The retailer also pointed to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, weaker domestic consumption linked to China’s property sector slowdown and broader challenges facing the luxury market. Galeries Lafayette will continue operating its stores in Shanghai and Shenzhen.

THE WHY? The closure highlights the continued pressure on luxury retailers in China as softer consumer spending, changing shopping behaviours and increased demand for digital and experience-led retail models reshape the market.
