'Toy Story 5' Soars Past Pixar's Biggest Flop in Record-Breaking Box Office Debut
After the back-to-back success of Obsession and Backrooms, and the solid box-office debut of Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, the summer is heating up with a record-breaking new release. Pixar's Toy Story 5 delivered a franchise-best opening weekend haul, outgrossing a handful of the studio's weakest-performing movies in three days flat. Pixar has had an uneven run in these last few years, with several original films underperforming at the box office. In fact, the legendary animation house's last two releases — Elioand Hoppers — both fell short of the high benchmark that it has set for itself. However, there was some respite to be had in 2024 when Inside Out 2 broke records to become the highest-grossing Pixar movie of all time, and briefly the highest-grossing animated movie ever made.
