Lithuanian PM and Cabinet Quit—No Snap Election in Sight

The Prime Minister of Lithuania resigned—along with her cabinet—on Tuesday, June 24th.

Inga Ruginienė and her team are expected to be replaced by a new cabinet led by Mindaugas Sinkevičius—who would be the third Social Democrat prime minister in Vilnius since the 2024 elections.

The decision follows changes in the ruling coalition and ends a ten-month tenure characterised by continual crisis. This includes balloon incursions from Belarus, drone incursions from the Russo-Ukrainian war, and corruption allegations after taking family members on official business abroad.

Departing from her final cabinet meeting as PM, for now at least, Ruginienė told journalists

Nothing in politics is permanent, and we as politicians must understand that our positions and offices are not eternal.

We are given a certain period of time to do good work, and I believe that this government has made proper use of that time.

She is expected to return to government as social affairs minister in the next Social Democrat cabinet.
