Shiseido advances skin transparency research with new optical measurement technology
THE WHAT? Shiseido has developed a new technology to evaluate how light penetrates and scatters within the skin, advancing its research into skin translucency.
THE DETAILS Through joint research with the Muroran Institute of Technology, Shiseido enhanced its proprietary non-invasive optical measurement system to analyse subsurface scattering light at different penetration depths. The research identified epidermal melanin levels and dermal collagen density as key factors influencing how light is absorbed and re-emitted from the skin. Findings showed that shorter wavelengths interact mainly with epidermal melanin, while longer wavelengths penetrate deeper into the dermis and are affected by collagen density.
THE WHY? The research strengthens scientific understanding of skin translucency, a key aesthetic attribute in skincare, and supports the development of more targeted formulations and technologies. By linking optical behaviour to specific biological structures, Shiseido is building a more precise framework for addressing visible skin quality and age-related changes.
