Coupang founder apologises for customer data breach
THE WHAT? Coupang founder and chairman Kim Bom has issued a public apology following a customer data leak and said the company will introduce a compensation plan.
THE DETAILS In a statement published on Coupang’s website, Kim said he “sincerely apologises” for the breach, which was disclosed in November, and pledged investments and reforms to prevent future incidents. Coupang said personal data relating to around 3,000 customers was accessed but not transferred or sold, and that the company is cooperating with South Korean authorities.
THE WHY? The apology comes amid mounting political and public pressure in South Korea, including criticism over Kim’s absence from parliamentary hearings on one of the country’s largest data breaches. The incident highlights growing regulatory scrutiny around data protection and corporate accountability in consumer-facing digital platforms.
