Saga University to launch Japan’s first public cosmetics science faculty
THE WHAT? Saga University will open a new faculty dedicated to the science of cosmetics in April, marking the first cosmetics-focused faculty at a Japanese national or public university.
THE DETAILS The faculty will accept 30 students and aims to train specialists in cosmetics manufacturing, formulation, quality evaluation and safety assessment. Teaching will be delivered by 34 faculty members across disciplines including biochemistry, medicine, packaging design and marketing, with students also undertaking internships at local cosmetics companies. The initiative builds on a cosmetics course introduced in 2021 and a cooperation agreement signed with Saga Prefectural Government in May 2025.
THE WHY? The move supports Saga Prefecture’s wider strategy to strengthen its local cosmetics industry by attracting corporate R&D, developing new materials and expanding exports into Asia. Strong early interest in the programme signals growing demand for talent with technical and commercial expertise as Japan’s cosmetics sector faces continued innovation and global competition pressures.
