Volkswagen has priced a pair of new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUVs for the Australian market, and they’re considerably cheaper than its only other PHEV model sold Down Under.

The Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid range is priced from $64,590 before on-road costs, while the Tayron eHybrid range is priced from $62,390 before on-roads – less than half the price of the Touareg R large performance SUV that was previously the brand’s only PHEV in Australia.

Order books will open soon for the new PHEV SUVs, ahead of their arrival in Australian showrooms during the second quarter (April to June) of 2026, with both to be offered in 150TSI eHybrid Elegance and 200TSI eHybrid R-Line grades.

They mate a 1.5-litre ‘TSI’ four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, for total system outputs of 150kW in the 150TSI and – you guessed it – 200kW in the 200TSI.

The PHEVs use a 19.7kWh battery, providing electric-only driving range of 113-117km depending on the variant. The battery can be charged at up to 11kW using AC power and 40kW using DC power.

Volkswagen claims combined-cycle fuel consumption of between 1.6 and 1.8L/100km.

At $64,590 before on-road costs, the base Tiguan 150TSI eHybrid Elegance is $3000 more than the petrol-powered Tiguan 150TSI Elegance, though it does without all-wheel drive.

The Tiguan 200TSI eHybrid R-Line is $74,550 before on-road costs, or $3000 more than the existing Tiguan flagship, the all-wheel drive 195TSI R-Line.

While a full spec list has yet to be released, Volkswagen has confirmed the following options for the Tiguan:

• Metallic paint: $800
• Premium metallic paint: $1100
• Panoramic sunroof: $2100
• Black Style Package: $1500 (R-Line only)

The Tayron is a slightly larger version of the Tiguan, which can be had with a third row of seating. However, the Tayron eHybrid is offered only as a five-seater, though it boasts 705 litres of cargo space – up from 490L in the Tiguan.

The 150TSI eHybrid Elegance is priced at $62,390 before on-roads, or $2000 more than the 150TSI Elegance albeit without a third row of seating or all-wheel drive.

The flagship 200TSI eHybrid R-Line is $76,550 before on-roads, $2000 more than the existing Tayron 195TSI R-Line flagship.

The same options and option prices for the Tiguan apply to the Tayron, though the Tayron 150TSI eHybrid Elegance is also available with a Sound & Vision Package for an extra $4200 – though Volkswagen Australia hasn’t confirmed what’s in this just yet.

In the petrol-powered Tayron 150TSI Elegance, it includes a head-up display, Harman Kardon sound system, and HD Matrix LED headlights.

Both the Tiguan and Tayron in petrol-powered 150TSI Elegance guise include as standard leather-appointed upholstery; heated, ventilated and massaging front seats; a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation; a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster; a wireless phone charger; semi-autonomous parking assist; and a power tailgate, along with a suite of active safety and driver assistance features.

Rivals for the Tiguan and Tayron eHybrids will include everything from the BYD Sealion 6 and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV through to the Mazda CX-60 and upcoming Skoda Kodiaq PHEVs.
