The fallout from the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl at a Neukölln youth center led a beleagured personnel department to take action.

On April 8th, a spokesperson for the Neukölln district office confirmed that a high-ranking employee of the youth welfare office has been suspended.

The move follows a firestorm of criticism over the agency’s failure to report the 2025 sexual assault to the police, an omission allegedly motivated by a desire to “keep a low profile” and a political commitment to avoiding fueling “prejudices” against suspects of Arab descent.

While youth councillor Sarah Nagel  has attributed the silence to “serious professional errors” and insists there was “absolutely no attempt to cover up,” she remains at the center of a criminal investigation for obstruction of justice.

Despite her claims that the agency was waiting for the victim’s consent to file a report, the police only became aware of the crime in late February—not through the district authority, but through a report filed by the girl’s father.

With multiple disciplinary actions pending and Nagel—of The Left Party—herself facing potential removal, the case has become a symbol of the dangerous friction between ideologically fuelled sensitivity and the state’s duty to protect minors.
