The EU should not be too hasty in releasing frozen funds for Hungary after Sunday’s vote, left-wing European lawmakers said Tuesday, warning that Prime Minister-elect Péter Magyar must first implement concrete reforms.

Magyar has vowed to unlock the billions involved, and Brussels has signaled a willingness to cooperate as both sides pursue a “quick reset.”

Daniel Freund, an MEP with the Greens, stated

We all want this government to be successful. We want EU money to go to citizens, including Hungarian citizens, but we want this under the full respect of the rule of law.

The Commission is currently withholding approximately €18 billion earmarked for Budapest due to what ir describes as “democratic backsliding, corruption concerns, and the treatment of LGBT issues.”
