Authorities in Bremen have launched an investigation after pork was allegedly served to children at a daycare centre.

The incident took place at a childcare facility in the city’s northern district, where a high proportion of children come from Muslim families. According to reports, a kitchen employee is suspected of ordering, preparing and distributing pork products despite dietary restrictions observed by many of the children. The worker was dismissed with immediate effect, with officials citing alleged racist motives.

State security authorities are now examining whether any criminal offences were committed. Local officials said the case would be assessed in coordination with police and supervisory bodies. 

The incident has drawn strong reactions from community representatives. The Islamic umbrella organisation Schura described the case as a “loss of trust” and called for measures to ensure it is not repeated. Security measures have reportedly been introduced at the facility following the controversy.

This episode coincides with concerns in Vienna, where, according to the Farmers’ Association, pork dishes such as schnitzel are becoming increasingly rare on school menus. In some cases, pork is no longer offered at all, with menus focusing on vegetarian or alternative meat options.
