A U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, initially set to expire Sunday, will be extended by an additional 45 days, the U.S. State Department announced on Friday after two days of talks between Israeli and Lebanese delegations concluded in Washington.

The political delegations will reconvene in early June with hopes to “advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border,” State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott wrote on social media late Friday.

Additionally, the Pentagon is set to host talks with military delegations from both countries along the security track on May 29, Pigott said.

According to a readout from the Lebanese embassy, the U.S. will also “proactively facilitate enhanced military-to-military communication and coordination between Lebanon and Israel,” adding that if talks continue to yield positive results, the ceasefire will be extended again.

“There will be ups and downs, but the potential for success is great,” Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter wrote on X after Friday’s meetings ended.

At least six people have been killed in Israeli attacks Friday night, according to Lebanese state media, with 37 wounded.

The Israeli army announced Saturday that it launched a new wave of airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. Israel claims this is not in breach of the truce, citing Hezbollah threats.
